What next for the FlyCardiff campaign and Cardiff Airport?

In 2011 three people who’d not ever met joined in a discussion on LinkedIn about Cardiff Airport. Needless to say there was lots of doom and gloom and much evidence of Wales’ 2nd national sport, after Rugby i.e. knocking Cardiff Airport, from others contributors to the discussion.

Rather than stand on the side spectating with the airport’s detractors they decided to try and change things and FlyCardiff was born

Our two year anniversary has recently passed and much has happened in that time, some of it predictable, some less so. We don’t think any of us foresaw the following:
·         Welsh Government buying Cardiff Airport
·         The arrival and then continued expansion of Vueling’s  offering at Cardiff
·         The fact that politicians are now finally recognising the economic importance of Cardiff Airport (belatedly)
·         Recognition by the Welsh Government that inbound Tourism ,through Cardiff Airport, would be of economic benefit to the Welsh economy (again belatedly)

What next for the campaign and the airport? This week we reached 3000 Twitter Followers and now have 1200 Facebook likes but in our opinion it remains a mystery to us why on earth on the First Minister’s watch the airport was allowed to hit rock bottom. So much so, that perhaps in a years’ time there wouldn’t have been a Cardiff Airport. What an embarrassment that would have been for Wales – a capital city without an airport!

Nonetheless we have to look forward – the Airport has got its 'mojo' back and the only way is up.

Off course, there is still much to do. Outside of the UK – Wales is very little known (another failing of our elected representatives). Dare we say replacing of The Welsh Tourist Board by Civil Servants hasn’t exactly been a success?

So we make this plea to the First Minister –“go out there and sell Wales and all it has offer to the World, the Airlines and let’s show them how Wales ,our small but confident nation can punch above its weight in the global and connected markets of commerce and tourism”

The FlyCardiff Team

PS – First Minister -  No more PR disasters like the X91 Airport Bus fiasco - the people of Wales deserve better than the politics of continual catch up. Drive the bus – stop running after it in all senses
