Our ambition since starting our campaign, improvements at Cardiff Airport, has been a world class airport for a world class city.
As the MD the buck stopped with Patrick Duffy. Time will reveal whether his departure coincided with the criticism of the airport on BBC's Week In Week Out Programme " Turbulent Times at Cardiff Airport" or whether it had been in the offing for a little while.
What none of us know, at this stage, is whether his departure will herald a significant change in the fortunes of this economically important international gateway to Wales.
Is major surgery required to recuperate Cardiff Airport or will the cosmetic removal/resignation of Duffy be enough ? Is the patient in need of major surgery in the shape of new owners, new investment etc ? Clearly Carwyn Jones feels so and his frustration with the current owners was and is clear to see for all.
The challenge, for any new or the current owner is to convince airlines to come to Cardiff. This will only happen if they can demonstrate that there is a sufficiently large market and demand from the people of Wales to sustain new routes. Not an impossible task as Vueling , Europe's 4th biggest lo-co operator, were able to be convinced to take a punt on Cardiff.
We wish Patrick Duffy every success in his next role and needless to say we will continue to support our National Airport in it's efforts to return to good health.
